On Sunday, May 29th, I decided that I would visit two churches. I did this because I would be on vacation the next Sunday. (Actually, by the time this is posted, I should be in the air on my way to Alaska.) I wanted to pick two different type of churches for this “double hitter”. (I don’t even like baseball so this might not even be the right term, lol)
I chose to go to Dan River Church’s 9amservice and Unity Presbyterian Church’s 11am service. I knew that these two churches would be differnt in denomination, worship style, and age demographics.
When I pulled into Dan River Church (DRC) I noticed that they had signs in the parking lot, letting you know that you were in the right place, and where to go! I parked and saw volunteers at the door ready to welcome me in. As I walked into the church I headed to the left as I knew where the sanctuary was, however, there weren’t really signs pointing me to where I needed to go.
I walked in and found a spot for the service and soon their praise band started to play. I will say this, their praise band is absolutely fantastic! Lots of folks came in with coffee and donuts which gave the sense that this is a very laid back and comfortable church. (LOVE THAT) Soon the lead pastor came up and began talking about the church’s upcoming events. He kept referring to a worship paper that I did not have, so I walked out to get one. They had them laying on a table with a peppermint on them… not sure how I missed that!
The sermon was by their mission’s pastor since they had a mission team leaving from DRC that week to serve their village in Honduras. He preached on the importance of spreading the gospel both locally and globally. This topic is one that I am personally passionate about as I have served locally, out of state, and out of the country on mission teams.
The worship service ended with an alter call, which was expected, since this church is baptist and a plant church of Thomas Road Baptist Church. I left and was happy to see that they had greeters back at the door to say goodbye to folk (great touch)… Now on to the next church…
