On Sunday, July 24th, I visited First Presbyterian Church located at 937 Main Street Danville, VA 24541. If you grew up in Danville, chances are you have had prom or senior pictures taken on the steps of this church.
I was pleased that they have a very updated and informative website which told me what time their service starts and what all they offer. I walked into the front doors and was greeted and handed a bulletin. I was surprised to see lit candles in each window. The sanctuary was very bright in its light colors, but so pretty.
During the opening of their service they did something that I had not seen done before. The pastor would not mention any names of those that were sick or having surgery since the service was being recorded for online viewing. She also mentioned that it could make members vulnerable by letting others know that they are sick, home alone, or away from their home. I think that this was a really great point, and one that other churches may want to consider that live stream. However, I will add that there needs to be a way to let the church family know of illnesses so they can reach out and care for their fellow members. (They may do this, I just do not know since I was a first time visitor.)
They did not have many children present at this particular service, but they did have a children’s message for those that were there and watching online. The “Adult” message was based on Acts chapter three, where a man was healed by a disciple and able to walk again through the power of the Holy Spirit. Here are some of the highlights that I took away from her sermon… It is important to know what your spiritual gifts are, it is even more important to know when to use them to glorify God, God will give you small tasks and tests but the rewards will be great, we forget that our spiritual gifts are more valuable than gold, our gifts of the spirit are not traits that we have but tools to use, and to never think that the God of yesterday will not still foster miracles today through us!
Needless to say, I was touched, moved and challenged by this pastor’s message! The rest of the service was very traditional in their order of worship and in their music selections. There were around 50 in attendance that week. The pastor greeted me on the way out. Also, one of their members did go out of her way to welcome me to the church when I arrived and another when I was leaving.
